Watershed
Values At 35,000 hectares, the
upper Goat is the second largest undeveloped, unprotected watershed in the
Fraser Headwaters region. It
contributes to critical ecosystem connectivity between Bowron Lake Provincial
Park and the Rocky Mountain Trench. In
the Silva Forest Foundation’s recently released
Fraser Headwaters Proposed Conservation
Plan, the upper Goat is a key part of
a corridor stretching between Bowron
Lake and
Kakwa
Provincial Parks. The undeveloped upper Goat River watershed provides vital habitat for numerous species including grizzly bears and endangered mountain caribou, the latter of which is a red-listed species and has dwindled to less than 2300 individuals. Chinook salmon travel 1,000 kilometres from the ocean to spawn in the crystal clear waters of the Goat River itself. Blue-listed bull trout also find rearing and spawning habitat here.
